The VP-1 was designed by W. S. Evans of La Jolla, California to be as easy as possible to build in a home workshop and with a minimum of tooling. The final design is a boxy wood and fabric, single-seat sport plane. The fuselage is nothing more than a plywood box while the constant chord of the wings makes all the ribs identical and eases production and assembly. A Volkswagen engine powers the VP-1 and it was from this that the name Volksplane was derived. The VP-1s ease of construction and docile flying characteristics has made it very popular and literally hundreds have been built around the world.
